Latvia extends National Armed Forces' participation in ISAF in Afghanistan

BC, Riga, 11.10.2012.Print version

Today, Saeima members decided to extend the mandate for the National Armed Forces' participation in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan until October 13, 2013, writes LETA.

The parliament's decision is based on the United Nations Security Council's decision on extending the mandate.

Taking into account that the ISAF military operations are among NATO's priorities, Latvia must continue contributing to the alliance, confirming that it is a trustworthy international coalition member, points out the Defense Ministry. The National Armed Forces' participation in the ISAF operations is connected with the plans of several partner countries in Afghanistan, which, among other factors, are based on the assumption that Latvia will continue to provide support in 2013.

Latvian soldiers have been participating in the NATO-led mission in Afghanistan since 2003.
