BC, Riga, 10.08.2012.Print version

Latvian beach volleyball pair Martins Plavins and Janis Smedins made a thrilling comeback after losing the first set to beat 5th seeded Reinder Nummerdor and Richard Schuil of the Netherlands in the bronze medal match at the London Olympics last night, informs LETA.

Plavins/Smedins, who were the Olympic tournament's 17th seed, defeated Nummerdor/Schuil 2-1 (19:21, 21:19, 15:11).

The Latvian pair were ahead by a point or two in most of the first-set, but Nummerdor/Schuil took the advantage at the end of the set to win it.

It looked over in the second-set for the Latvian duo when they went down 3:8 against the Dutch pair, but Plavins/Smedins fought back bravely to tie the set at 10:10 and eventually win the set.

It was all Latvia in the decisive set however, who were able to take a commanding lead right from the get go.

This is Latvia's first medal at the Games.

As reported, in the semi-final showdown on Tuesday night, Plavins/Smedins' win streak was halted by the powerful beach volleyball duo from Brazil – Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego, who finished with the silver medal after losing to German pair Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann 1-2 in the final.
