„Sōla„ and „Latvian Voices” to participate in World Choir Games 2012

The mixed choir of Latvian Academy of Culture „Sōla” and a capella vocal group „Latvian voices” will be representing Riga, the European Capital of Culture for 2014, in World Choir Games that are held from July 4 till July 14 in Cincinnati, U.S, informed BC the Latvian Institute.

 

More than 15 000 singers from 75 countries will participate in the games. All in all, 370 choirs will compete in 23 various categories.

 

Since the next World Choir Games will be held in Riga in 2014, Latvian choirs are accompanied by members of the foundation “Riga 2014” with the goal of promoting Latvia as the next venue for the Games.

 

A special Riga stand has been made as a meeting place for choir singers from all over the world. It will feature a library with the possibilities to watch videos about Riga, Latvia and the traditions of Song and Dance Festivals.

 

The delegation will also include Latvia’s Minister of Culture Žanete Jaunzeme-Grende and Riga mayor Nils Ušakovs who are planning to meet the head of Cincinnati Mark Mallroy as well as Günter Titsch – the president of one of the executive organisations for the Games from Germany “Interkultur”.

 

The first World Choir Games took place in 2000 in Linz, Austria. Latvian conductors Romāns Vanags and Mārtiņš Klišāns are among the Council for the World Choir Games. In the 2006 games Latvian choir “Kamēr” convincingly took the first place.
