Unowned life-threatening chemicals found in Kaunas

BC, Vilnius, 15.06.2012.Print version

The Kaunas Municipality Emergency Committee is not yet able to answer the question, who has to take care of transportation, storing and utilisation of life-threatening chemicals, writes LETA/ELTA.

"We have never faced this problem before, until some caesium capsules were found last month. Specialised services sector refused to remove and store them. This important issue should be solved as fast as possible," Gediminas Jankus, representative of the Kaunas Municipality said. The municipality has an agreement with Kauno Svara but only on storing oil products and mercury, it cannot store any other unrecognised chemic elements. Caesium is a dangerous chemical that emits radiation, therefore, even traffic was stopped in the area where the capsules had been found.
