Estonian composer Pärt gets highest French state award

French Minister of Culture Frédéric Mitterrand presented Estonian composer Arvo Pärt with the highest decoration in France, Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour, LETA/National Broadcasting reports.

 

“This is very big honour for me and my homeland Estonia,” Pärt said when receiving the award.

 

The Knight of the National Order of the Legion of Honour was founded in 1802 by Napoleon I Bonaparte. In Estonia it has been awarded among others to former president Lennart Meri, current president Toomas Hendrik Ilves, current European Commissioner Siim Kallas, writer Jaan Kross, writer Jaan Kaplinski, French language teacher and school principal Lauri Leesi and historian Jüri Kuuskemaa.
