Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia announces Köler Prize 2011 nominees

BC, Tallinn, 07.03.2011.Print version

Contemporary Art Museum of Estonia (EKKM) has chosen the nominees for Köler Prize 2011 – they are five artists, who are permanently residing in Estonia or have Estonian citizenship, based on their works during the last three years. International jury will select a laureate from the nominees who will receive 5,000 euros, as Estonian culture fund Tallinn 2011 reported.

The artists will present two works or a whole series of works at the exhibition from May 1 until June 5. The first is an older work, which has been previously publicly presented, and the second is a new one, made especially for this exhibition, writes LETA.

The award for 2011 will be given by a company based on Estonian capital – Smarten Logistics.

The audience will also get a chance to pick a favorite from the exhibition. The audience's favorite will receive 1,000 euros, which will be given by a new gallery with ambitious plans – Temnikova and Kasela.

The nominees' exhibition will also open the EKKM's European Capital of Culture year's season of exhibitions.

The awards will be given at the gala on May 28 this year.

EKKM was founded in 2006 by artists, art students, gallery owners and curators in order to fill the empty place at the Estonian institutional art field and to promote contemporary art on local and international level. EKKM can be called a counter-public institution, which includes many characteristics of a normative public institution, but with the aim to embody a different kind of institution.

EKKM is a method of self-instituting, the task of which should be to operate as something 'odd' in the sense of a normal public meaning, it should be an unconventional image of the public. In one way, EKKM's aim is to take the place of a missing contemporary art museum in the art field, but in another sense it should ask what a contemporary art museum should be like: what makes a museum and what kind of a museum is possible and necessary.
