Estonia celebrates 91st anniversary of Tartu Peace Treaty

On Wednesday, 91 years pass of concluding the Tartu Peace Treaty between Estonia and Russia and Soviet Russia acknowledging Estonia’s independence, LETA/National Broadcasting reports.

 

The anniversary is celebrated with many events, which this year take mostly place in Tartu. Wreaths will be laid at the War of Freedom monuments, a meeting is organised by Farmers Assembly. An event dedicated to the 91st anniversary of the Tartu Peace Treaty and 145th birth anniversary of Jaan Poska takes place on Tartu City Museum. In the evening there will be a special concert in the Vanemuine theatre.

 

On February 2, 1920, representatives of the Government of the Republic of Estonia and those of the Russian Socialist Federal Soviet Republic’s council of People’s Commissars concluded a treaty in Tartu in which Russia recognised Estonia’s independence and statehood. The treaty also ended the War of Freedom that had lasted for 431 days and claimed over 5,000 lives from Estonia and her allies as well as established a state border between Estonia and Russia.
