40 Riga children infected with salmonella after eating chicken

Around 40 children at a Riga pre-school educational institution became infected with salmonella after eating chicken in meals prepared by the institution's canteen, LETA was informed by the Latvian Infectology Center.

 

The illnesses were noted between April 14 and 26. Infections were registered in nine of a total of 11 groups of children. The children contracted the illness after eating chicken which had been prepared by the institution's canteen without following hygiene rules.

 

The center did not reveal in which institution the outbreak of salmonella took place.

 

The Food and Veterinary Service have been notified of the situation.

 

Experts explain that salmonella is an infectious disease which usual affects the digestive tract. The symptoms of salmonella are nausea, vomiting, cramps, diarrhea, fever, and headaches. If the illness proceeds into its most serious form, or if a small child becomes infected, the large loss of fluids can lead to severe dehydration. The symptoms of salmonella appear from 6 to 72 hours after infection.
