Print versionToday, International Women's Day is being celebrated in many regions around the world.
In 1910, the first international women's conference was held in Copenhagen by the Socialist International, and an International Women's Day was established at proposal of German Socialist Clara Zetkin, informs LETA.
In the Soviet Union, Women's Day became the "day of red tulips", when tulips, grown in greenhouses, were presented to nearly all women and girls. The Women's Day was also a national holiday from 1966 up until the collapse of the Soviet Union.
On May 24, 2007, Latvian Saeima decided to pass amendments to the law On Holidays and Remembrance Days and include Women's Day as an official holiday.
