Young Estonians founded a Pirate Party

BC, Tallinn, 30.06.2009.Print version

MTÜ Piraadipartei was registered in the Estonian commercial register as a non-profit organisation, writes the National Broadcasting/LETA.

The organisation's role model are apparently the Scandinavian sister parties.

Member of the management board of Piraadipartei Alari Keedus noted that as of yet, the organisation has not nearly as many members as are necessary for founding a political party.

Keedus also did not want to discuss the organisation's plans in more detail, but noted that in coming weeks it is planned to disclose the organisation's plans for the wider public.

"You will soon learn about more general and more exact objectives," he said, adding that in coming weeks the organisation will set up its website for more detailed information and will also send out a press release.

He did note, however, that parallels with the analogous parties in the Scandinavian countries could be drawn.

The best-known Pirate Party was founded in Sweden in 2006 with the objective to reform laws linked to protecting authors' rights and patents. Similar parties have officially been registered in Germany, Spain, Austria and in Poland, plans are to do the same in Finland.
