BC, Riga, 26.03.2009.Print version

On April 1, former prime minister of Latvia, currently member of the Saeima Aigars Kalvitis (People's Party) will lay down his Saeima mandate, LNT television broadcast reported yesterday.

As Kalvitis admitted in an interview to LNT, he intends to leave active politics and does not plan to participate "in the next three – four elections".

Ten years in politics were challenging and interesting, with positive and negative moments, the politician admits. He explains his decision to quit work in the parliament: "It is very important to give new people the chance to become involved in politics; so that they, with new energy, power and ardor, could tackle the problems that are crucial for Latvia."

Kalvitis announced his decision to leave politics to the People's Party's Saeima group today and his several party members were surprised about Kalvitis' decision.

According to LETA's information, there have been unofficial announcements that Kalvitis could become chairman of telecommunications enterprise Lattelecom board after the current board chairman Gundars Strautmanis' term in office ends.

Kalvitis was elected to the 7th, 8th and 9th Saeima and previously was chairman of the People's Party.
