Estonian local municipalities hoist flags to support Tibet

BC, Tallinn, 10.03.2009.Print version

On Tuesday morning twelve local municipalities in Estonia hoisted flags to express their support for Tibet on the 50th anniversary of the day when the uprising of Tibetans against the occupation force culminated, writes Postimees Online/LETA.

"What happens in Tibet should be familiar for us from our recent past," said the chairman of the Riigikogu Tibet support group Aleksei Lotman. "Destruction of national culture, persecution of dissidents, re-population, a threat of remaining a minority in their own country, colonialist attacks on the nature – all this is a reality in today's Tibet," he added.

The flag of Tibet will be hoisted on Tuesday in the rural municipalities of Ahja, Vastse-Kuuste, Põlva, Risti, Hanila, Lihula, Värska, Mikitamäe, Misso and Martna as well as in the City of Põlva, in Vastseliina and on the building of the Estonian Student Society in Tartu.

"During one single day we managed to distribute all flags that organisers had," said the director of the Institute of Buddhism Sven Grünberg. He stated that the initiators were surprised at the great support for Tibet on the grassroots level.
