The European Parliament elections in Estonia to take place on June 7

BC, Tallinn, 05.03.2009.Print version

President of Estonia Toomas Henrik Ilves signed on Wednesday evening the resolution calling the European Parliament elections for June 7, writes the National Broadcasting/LETA.

Ilves also made a statement that was televised in the Estonian National Broadcasting, reminding the EU citizens to vote in Estonia that the procedure of the upcoming elections has changed in Estonia in comparison to the first European Parliamentary elections in 2004. "This time, voters cannot give their votes to their preferred candidates, but have to choose between lists of different parties," explained the President.

"I hope that our parties understand the responsibility associated with this change; that they only present candidates who will go and work in the European Parliament if elected, thereby justifying the trust their voters have placed in them," stated Ilves, adding that those who stand as candidates only to win votes and have no intention to work in the European Parliament are deceiving the public.
