Latvian National Opera changes repertoire due to budget cuts

BC, Riga, 15.01.2009.Print version

Due to reduced funding and taking into consideration the unfavorable economic situation in Latvia, the Latvian National Opera (LNO) has made significant changes in its 2009 repertoire, as LETA learned from the LNO's spokeswoman Inga Vasiljeva.

LNO has cancelled its Opera Ball, which was planned to take place on March 21; it has also given up plans to make a new staging of the Richard Wagner's opera "Die Walküre".

Changes will be made also to the LNO's program in the first half of the next season – new production of the ballet "A Midsummer Night's Dream" has been postponed to autumn 2010 instead of the originally planned autumn 2009.

The LNO is taking into consideration the changes in the financial situation and is adjusting its policy accordingly, especially regarding new productions and signing contracts with freelance soloists, as the LNO's executive director Selga Laizane informed LETA.
