Saeima today granted Latvian citizenship to classical conductor Karel Mark Chichon for his service to Latvia, informed LETA. 

"Chichon is one of the most exciting young conductors who charms international audiences with his temperament, passion and musicianship," the parliament said. 

Born in 1971 in London, Chichon is a resident of Latvia since 2009. From 2009 to 2012 he was Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Latvian National Symphony Orchestra (LNSO). Chichon is married to Latvian mezzo soprano Elina Garance and their two daughters are citizens of Latvia.

From 2011 to 2017 Chichon was Chief Conductor of the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie Saarbrücken Kaiserslautern with whom he recently renewed his contract until 2017. In May 2017 he was appointed Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Orquesta Filarmonica de Gran Canaria.
