BC, Riga, 30.10.2020.Print version

Sweden-based artist of Latvian descent Laris Strunke passed away in Stockholm on Tuesday, the Latvian National Museum of Art informed LETA.

Strunke was born on February 10, 1931 in Riga in the family of the outstanding Latvian painter Niklavs Strunke. Art was Laris Strunke's passion since childhood, but as the World War II broke out the Strunke family was forced to leave Latvia. After the war, Sweden became the new home to the Strunkes.

In the 1950s, Laris Strunke studied at Acacemie libre in France. He has participated in group exhibitions and had solo exhibitions in Sweden, Latvia, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Hungary, Iceland, Brazil, Canada, China, Australia, Singapore, Italy and Mexico. His paintings are featured in museums and private collections in Sweden, Latvia and elsewhere in the world.

Strunke represents a very independent trend in Sweden's contemporary art and he is one of the few Latvia-born artists whose art has won international acclaim. Although entirely unique, Strunke's manner is close to abstract expressionism.
