Savickis: Dinamo will not call up players from HK Riga

BC, Riga , 24.09.2020.Print version

While the Kontinental Hockey League club Riga Dinamo is in quarantine until October 5 because of the Covid-19 coronavirus, calling up players from Dinamo's farm club HK Riga is just an option, which will not be used, Dinamo CEO Juris Savickis told LETA.

As reported, yesterday Dinamo was put into quarantine unil October 5. Dinamo had to play five games in the time period until October 5 - three at home and two on the road.

"Calling up players from the farm club is one of the options recommended by the league," Savickis told LETA. "There are teams with such great farm clubs that they can afford playing like that. However, there are significant differences between our players in the KHL and the MHL league. That is why we have decided together with Dinamo head coach Peteris Skudra that we will not do this and we will not throw our young players under the bus."

There are other options: postponing the games, accepting a defeat, and playing with those players who have been cleared by the Disease Prevention and Control Center (CDC).

"CDC has put the entire team in quarantine," said Savickis. "We have fifteen healthy players. If we added some ten players from the farm club, we could play these matches."

"We will definitely postpone some of the matches," said Savickis. "However, the league cannot do it forever, otherwise it will be impossible to complete the tournament."
