Estonia celebrates Resistance Day on Tuesday to mark the nearly 50-year fight for the restoration of its independence, informs LETA/BNS.

Resistance Day celebrations will start with a flag-raising ceremony at the foot of the Tall Hermann tower at 7:06 a.m., spokespeople for the Government Office told BNS on Monday.

At 9 a.m., Estonian Population Minister Riina Solman will lay a commemorative bouquet on the grave of former prime minister Otto Tief at the Metsakalmistu cemetery.

At 10 a.m. wreaths will be laid at the memorial to victims of Communism at Maarjamae in Tallinn by Minister of Defense Juri Luik and chairman of the Tallinn city council Tiit Terik.

At 2:30 p.m., an event commemorating the activities of the Forest Brothers' anti-Soviet resistance movement will be held by the Estonian Institute of Historical Memory. Speeches will be given by Minister of Justice Raivo Aeg and commander of the Estonian defense forces Maj. Gen. Martin Herem.

A commemorative service will be held at St. Michael's church in Keila at 4 p.m. and 16 candles will be lit in memory of Estonian state elders by the head of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church, Archbishop Urmas Viilma, and mayor of Keila Enno Fels. A speech will be given by Trivimi Velliste, chairman of the board of the Konstantin Pats Museum.

Resistance Day, which is celebrated on September 22, marks the September of 1944 when the government led by Otto Tief assumed office and Estonia unequivocally expressed the wish to be independent once again. Those who resisted the occupations are remembered on this day.
