BC, Tallinn, 07.07.2020.Print version

The Estonian Ministry of Defense on Tuesday sent a consignment of 2,400 Makarov pistols from Estonia to Ukraine with the aim of supporting the strengthening of Ukraine's independent defense capabilities, reports LETA/BNS.

Defense Minister Juri Luik said that Estonia supports Ukraine consistently and steadfastly -- the country's sovereignty and territorial integrity must be restored. "With the consignment, we are supporting our ally, who is at war for the sixth year," he added.

"Russia's continuing aggression in Crimea and eastern Ukraine is unacceptable and has a wider impact on security throughout Europe," Luik said. "With the consignment, we are supporting our ally, who is at war for the sixth year," he added.

The minister said that in addition to political support and development aid, it is important to offer real support to Ukraine's independent defense capabilities. "In addition to donating weapons, Estonia supports Ukraine in the training of special forces and in the field of military medicine, and shares experience in the fields of territorial and cyber defense," he added.

Luik stressed that despite the difficult situation in the country, Ukraine has continued to implement significant reforms, which is noteworthy.

Maj. Risto Partel, chief weapons officer of the defense forces, said the Estonian defense forces were able to donate their weapons because they switched to NATO standard caliber. "Makarov is compact, reliable and easy to use, and it will definitely add an important component to the weaponry of the Ukrainians," Partel said.

The weapons were sent at the request of Ukraine and will be received by the local army.

Transport costs of approximately 7,000 euros will be borne by Estonia.
