TTT Riga handed down technical loss for failing to arrive at relocated match due to coronavirus fears
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) has handed
down a technical loss to Latvian basketball club TTT Riga for failing to arrive
to its Thursday's relocated FIBA Women's Euroleague match due to coronavirus
fears, informed LETA.
This means that the club has finished in last place in its
Euroleague group and has failed to qualify for the FIBA Europe Cup playoffs.
As reported, taking into account the current circumstances
and risk factors, as well as the recommendations by Latvian specialists, the
board of Latvian basketball club TTT Riga decided against travelling to
Ljubljana for its next FIBA Women's Euroleague match, the club has informed.
TTT Riga was to play an away game at Italian club Venice
Umana Reyer Thursday evening, but due to the coronavirus outbreak in Italy the
match was re-located to Slovenia's capital Ljulbjana.
TTT Riga believes that the re-location of the match is
insufficient to protect the health of its players and coaching staff.
TTT Riga has called on FIBA Europe to cancel the match
altogether and consider its future decisions after consultations with with
international medical organizations.
TTT Riga points out that the health and safety of its
players remains its top priority.
The AFP news agency reports that Italy saw a fresh jump in
the number of cases of the new coronavirus Wednesday, with another death also
reported to bring the total to 12 and 374 infections.
The new toll published by the country's civil protection
department is a jump from the 322 cases and 10 deaths recorded on Tuesday
evening.
All of those who have died so far in Italy were either
elderly or had pre-existing medical conditions.
