Dinamo sign Bartulis and make several other roster changes

BC, Riga, 04.10.2019.Print version

Latvian ice hockey club Riga Dinamo has signed the controversial former Latvian national team defenseman Oskars Bartulis and made several other roster changes earlier this week after a disastrous start to the new Kontinental Ice Hockey League season.

Bartulis, a former NHLer for the Philadelphia Flyers, stated in June of 2018 that he has become a Russian citizen and turned down an invitation ever to play for the Latvian national team. However, later he claimed that he was still a Latvian citizen and would be happy to play for Latvia after not receiving the lucrative offers for his services he had most likely hoped for. The secretary-general of the Latvian Ice Hockey Federation (LHF) then turned down Bartulis' offer, and said that he would never play for the national team as long as he was working within the LHF.

According to Latvian law, a Latvian citizen cannot have dual citizenship with Russia.

Meanwhile, also this week, Dinamo has released former Latvian team goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis, Swedish forward Jacob Berglund and today put Swedish forward  David Ullstrom on waivers.

At the moment, Dinamo remains in last place in the KHL's Western Conference standings with six points from 12 matches.
