Latvia's Igor Kovalenko wins Mikhail Tal blitz chess memorial

Latvian chess player Igor Kovalenko won the Mikhail Tal blitz chess memorial on Thursday, while Latvian-born Alexey Shirov of Spain finished third, reported LETA. 


Kovalenko triumphed in the blitz event at the Omega hall of the Radisson Blu Latvija hotel, as he suffered no defeat in 13 rounds, winning 11 and tying two games. In the last round, Kovalenko faced Russian grandmaster Nikita Vitiugov and registered a tie, earning 12 points.


Riga-born Shirov, now playing for Spain, took third place among 234 participants of the tournament. In the last round he beat Russian grandmaster Vladimir Fedoseev from St. Petersburg and finished with 10 points despite losses to Kovalenko and Ukaine’s Vladimir Onischuk. Fedoseev came second with 10.5 points.


The tournament was played according to the Swiss system - the participants had three minutes for the game and two seconds for each move.


As LETA reported, the rapid event of the Tal Memorial, which took place on Wednesday, was won by Fedoseev who collected 9.5 points in 11 rounds of the competition.


The total prize fund of the tournaments is EUR 35 000, EUR 25 000 for the rapid chess tournament and 10 000 for the blitz tournament. Entry is free of charge for the spectators.
