Latvia's No. 1 tennis player Anastasija Sevastova defeated Alona Ostapenko 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 in the first round of the Women's Stuttgart Open on Tuesday, reported LETA/BNS.

Sevastova, who is ranked 13th in the WTA rankings and is seeded seventh at the tournament, has earned 55 WTA ranking points for advancing to the tournament's second round, while Ostapenko, 29th, has earned one point.

With today's defeat, Ostapenko has lost five matches in a row.

After convincingly winning the first set, Sevastova quickly found herself down 0-5 in the second. She then proceeded to win four consecutive games, yet Ostapenko prevailed to win the second set 6-4.

In the third set though, Ostapenko was not much of a challenge for Sevastova who won six straight games to win the match.

In the second round of the Stuttgart Open, Sevastova will play either Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko (26th in WTA rankings) or Germany's Laura Siegemund (99th).
