Latvia beats Slovakia at U18 WC to avoid relegation and qualify for knockout stage

In Latvia's third match of this year's World U-18 Men's Ice Hockey Championships (Elite Division) on Monday, the Latvian U-18 ice hockey team defeated Slovakia 2:0, write LETA. 


With the win, Latvia has avoided relegation and will play in tournament's quarterfinals.


Ernests Osenieks and Ralfs Jevdokimovs scored the goals for Latvia.


Latvia will play its final group game of the tournament on Tuesday against the United States.


As reported, Latvia opened the tournament with a 2:5 loss to Sweden, the lost to Russia 1:5.


The top four team in both groups will advance to the knockout stage, while the last placed teams in both groups will play in a relegation round to remain in the Elite Division.


Latvia is in the tournament's group B together with Sweden, Russia, the United States and Slovakia.


Last year, the Latvian U-18 squad triumphed in the Division A tournament in Riga to earn promotion to the Elite Division.
