Hoover Institution presented historic documents to Latvian War Museum

A ceremony took place at the Latvian War Museum this morning at 10, during which United States Ambassador to Latvia Charles Larson presented a gift from the U.S. Hoover Institution to Latvia's State Archive, as LETA was informed by the Press and Culture Center of the U.S. Embassy in Latvia.

 

The present includes a number of historic documents regarding Latvia-U.S. relations and the history of Latvia in various periods of time. As the embassy points out, it will be significant supplement to the collection of documents in the disposition of Latvia's archives.

 

The documents that will be presented as a gift to Latvia, include photographic evidence about U.S. President Herbert Hoover, who, before being elected president, organized a humanitarian aid program for European countries, which were ravaged after the First World War.

 

Researchers' could be interested also in the documents on relations between U.S. and Latvia in 1920's, as well as important documents on Latvia's occupation period. Some of the historic evidence provides information about outstanding achievements by Latvians in exile.

 

Today's event at the War Museum will took place within the framework of the international conference "Independence of Latvia: Idea and Realization", which will be opened by a speech by President Valdis Zatlers.
