Estonian National Museum to celebrate Latvia's centenary with special culture program
The Estonian National Museum along with the Tartu Latvian
Society is marking the centenary of the Republic of Latvia with a week-long
special program, reported LETA/BNS.
This weekend, two exhibitions by Latvian artists will
open at the Estonian National Museum. On Saturday at 4 p.m., a comic strip
exhibition titled "I am introvert" will be opened next to the Jakob
Hurt Hall. The exhibition in cooperation with Reinis Petersons stemmed from a
campaign aiming to promote Latvian literature for the London Book Fair. The concept
of the exhibition opposes the image of an extroverted modern writer, who knows
how to "sell" themselves.
At the opening, visitors can pose for an anti-selfie and
take a test determining their type of introversion. Latvian writes Janis
Jonevs and poet, translator and essayist Artis Ostup will be present,
discussing news of Latvian literature.
At 8:30 p.m., the Latvian quintet Rihards Libietis
Orchestra will be performing in the Jakob Hurt Hall as part of the IDeeJazz
festival.
On Sunday at 1 p.m., an exhibition by the Latvian artist
Dace Delina-Lipska titled "Mothers of Song" will be opened in
the museum's bridge area. Lipska's paintings focus on national identity,
bringing together minority language and culture communities from Estonia and
Latvia -- the Suiti, Livonians, Setos and the people of Kihnu. A Latvian
folklore group, Saulesmeitas, from Tinuzi will perform at the event.
Celebrations will be concluded on the 100th anniversary of
the Republic of Latvia on Nov. 18 when guided tours and a fair will take
place, and a special menu will be offered at the Pooripaev restaurant. At 5
p.m., a party will start in the bridge area, marked by a performance by a
Latvian bagpipe and drum band Auli. After the concert, a reception by the
embassy of Latvia will take place with a broadcast from the anniversary events
in Riga, followed by a concert by the Latvian group Teandems trijata.
