Ukrainian military learning English in Estonia
Eighteen personnel from the defense forces of Ukraine are
attending an English language course at the Estonian National Defense
College, reported LETA/BNS.
"We chose the people to attend the course from a unit
that we are having intense cooperation with already, and from among the
candidates we chose the ones who need English skills for specialist training in
the future," Col. Risto Lumi, head of the faculty for strategy and history
of war at the Estonian National Defense College, said according to
spokespeople.
"We wish the number of members of the Ukrainian
military fluent in English to have grown so much in the future that we can
organize specialist training courses for them here in Estonia," Lumi said.
After acquiring the necessary English proficiency level in
Estonia, the Ukrainian military will continue their training at various NATO
courses.
The project is a follow-up to a pilot which saw two military
personnel from Ukraine learn English in Estonia last year.
Ukraine has set its sights on acceding to the European Union
and NATO, which requires increasing the percentage of people fluent in English
in the country's armed forces, among other things.
The project for teaching English to military personnel from
Ukraine was initiated and is being financed by the Estonian Ministry of
Defense.
