Rietumu supports French tapestry exhibition in Riga
The Museum of Decorative Arts and Design is inviting the public to see
an exhibition of tapestries from the Mobilier National collection in France,
one of the events in Riga this summer that marks the 100th anniversary of
Latvia, organized with support from Rietumu Bank’s Charity Fund.
Exhibition Color of Gobelins offers a look into the textile collection of
Mobilier National (National Furniture Foundation) in France, where the Gobelins
Manufactory (La Manufacture nationale des Gobelins), since its founding in
Paris in the 17th century, continues to cultivate outstanding traditions of
craftsmanship and maintains a constant link to modern art.
The choice of 15 tapestries was based on color and its essential role in the
art of weaving. Along with works made from sketches of many famous artists, the
exhibition also includes two recent large-format tapestries made at Mobilier
National Manufactories in Paris and Beauvais by Latvian textile artist Egils
Rozenbergs: “Reflections – Contemplation 1948.13” and “Reflections –
Contemplation 1948.20”.
“The handmade works of art, created by artists from world-famous manufactures,
have to be seen in person. It is this kind of personal contact that gives
opportunity to relish the skill of the French weavers and to realize that true
art may take different forms, beyond the traditional concepts and classical
forms. We were happy to support the exhibition, to be able to contribute so
these wonderful tapestries could be seen by as many art connoisseurs as
possible in Latvia,” said Inga Shina, CEO at Rietumu Charity Fund.
The exhibition showcases works made from sketches by such outstanding artists
as Henri Matisse, Jean Lurçat, Joan Miró, Le Corbusier, Raymond Hains, Patrick
Tosani, Philippe Favier, Erró, François Boisrond, Gérard Schlosser, Vincent
Bioulès, Jacques Monory, Christophe Cuzin, Éric Sandillon.
The exhibition has been organized by
the Latvian National Museum of Art / Museum of Decorative Arts and Design with
support from Rietumu Charity Fund, in cooperation with Mobilier
National and the French Institute in Latvia.
