Wildfire in northern Estonia reaches close to 200 hectares in size

BC, Tallinn, 12.06.2018.Print version

A wildfire that started at Vikipalu in Estonia's northern Harju County on Sunday had spread to nearly 200 hectares by Monday night and firefighting will continue on Tuesday, informs LETA.

Due to strong winds, both the flames and smoke spread quickly on Monday and reports of the spreading smoke came from as far away as the eastern town of Jogeva. Measuring made in the evening showed the area on fire to be around 200 hectares, the Northern Rescue Center said.

The effort to contain the fire was helped by wind dying down by the night and some rainfall. On Monday 166 people were fighting the fire, among them rescuers from state-funded commandos, volunteers, members of Kaitseliit (Defense League) and local residents, as well as a helicopter of the Police and Boder Guard Board.

Vikipalu is located some 50 kilometers east of Tallinn.
