The Culture Ministry has picked actor and stage director Janis Vimba as the new board member of the Latvian National Theater, the ministry’s spokeswoman Lita Kokale told LETA, adding that Vimba will take office as the theater’s new head on June 27.

Culture Ministry State Secretary Dace Vilsone explained that the nominations panel had appreciated Vimba’s education in economics and his previous work experience both in the public and private sector. The experience Vimba has acquired as an actor and stage director was also recognized as a significant factor.

The Culture Ministry’s official noted that during the tender Vimba presented a strong vision on the theater’s future operations and development.

Vimba has been working at the National Theater as an actor since 2007 and has been staging theatrical productions as a director since 2009.

The new head of the National Theater has graduated from the Faculty of Economics of the Latvian University of Agriculture (now Latvia University of Life Sciences) and the Latvian Academy of Culture. He is continuing his master’s studies at the Latvian Academy of Culture.

Latvian National Theater previous head Ojars Rubenis’ second term in office as the theater’s board member expired on December 15 and he became the theater’s executive director.
