At least 53,128 people across Estonia took part in the 2018 edition of the Let's Do It! day of collective action on May 5 and the number of collective actions organized was 2,177, organizers said on Tuesday.

Participants in the day of collective action accounted for 4 percent of the country's population.

In a breakdown by county, the biggest numbers of actions were organized in Harju County and Tallinn, where 15,343 people took part in 469 collective actions. On the island of Saaremaa 4,629 people, equaling 13.9 percent of the county's population, took part in 222 collective actions. Next came Hiiu County with 11.9 percent, Laane County with 9.9 percent, and Jarva County with 9 percent.

The lowest percentages were registered in the counties that serve as home to the biggest cities: 2.9 percent in Tartu County, 2.7 percent in East-Viru County and 2.6 percent in Harju County.

In 2017, 2,130 events took place across Estonia as part of the Let's Do It! initiative and 52,650 people, 4 percent of the country's population, took part in them. The next day of collective action that is traditionally held on the first Saturday of May will take place on May 4, 2019.

This year is special in that aside from the day of collective action in May, on Sept. 15, 2018 a World Cleanup Day will see people in 150 countries, including Estonia, stand up against the global trash problem and clean up waste, making it the biggest positive civic action the world has seen.
