Russian national hockey team will be coached by Ilya Vorobiev at the upcoming Hockey World Championship, while the team's previous head coach, Oleg Znarok will work as the Russian team's consultant, the Russian Hockey Federation's President Vladislav Tretiak announced on April 12th, informs LETA..

Znarok's long-time assistant coach Harijs Vitolins has been dismissed from the Russian national team, Tretiak confirmed.

"Znarok has done a great job. He brought gold from the Olympic games and won four medals at world championships," commented Tretiak. However, Znarok feels psychologically worn out being the coach of St. Petersburg SKA as well as the national team.

Znarok's contract with the Russian national team will expire on May 31, while Vitolins' contract - on April 30. That means that Znarok will be part of the Russian coaching staff at the World Championship, but not Vitolins.

Chelyabinsk Traktor head coach Anvar Gatiyatulin has been appointed the Russian team's assistant coach.

Znarok, formerly a Latvian national hockey team forward and later the national team's coach, was appointed head coach of the Russian national team in 2014.

As reported, this year's Hockey World Championship in Denmark will kick off on May 4.
