Latvian Ornithological Society has named common redshank (Tringa totanus) the bird of the year 2018 in Latvia, the society's representative Agnis Buss told LETA.

Common redshanks live in wetlands, their most characteristic features include red legs and beak, said Buss.

According to the Ornithological Society's board chairman Viesturs Kerus, common redshank is a threatened species in the European Union, primarily because of intensifying agriculture and destruction of wetlands.

This year, the Ornithological Society will be organizing photo and drawing competitions featuring common redshank, and the three best artists will be awarded a special birdwatching tour.

The Ornithological Society's project Bird of the Year has been organized annually since 1996.
