IOC strips gold medal from Russia's Tretiakov; Dukurs becomes Olympic champion

BC, Riga, 23.11.2017.Print version

The International Olympic Committee yesterday stripped Russia's Alexander Tretiakov of his gold medal at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, which means that Latvia's Martins Dukurs, which won silver in the men's skeleton competition, has been upgraded to gold, informs LETA.

This also means that the United States' Matthew Antoine will be upgraded to silver, while Martins' brother Tomass will be upgraded to bronze.

Tretiakov and three other Russians were banned by the International Olympic Committee today for doping at the 2014 Sochi Games.

All four competed in the skeleton and include not only men's gold medalist Alexander Tretiakov, but also women's bronze medalist Elena Nikitina.

The IOC sanctions not only disqualify the Russians from the Sochi Olympics, but also ban them from all future Olympics, including the upcoming Winter Olympics in South Korea.
