Ostapenko drawn into one group with Muguruza, Pliskova and Williams at WTA Finals

Latvia's No. 1 tennis player and French Open Champion Alona Ostapenko will play in one group with Garbine Muguruza (Spain), Karolina Pliskova (Czech Republic) and Venus Williams (United States) in this year's WTA Finals in Singapore that start on Sunday and continue through next Sunday, reports LETA.

The 20-year-old Ostapenko has been drawn into the White Group.

The Red Group includes the current World No. 1 Simona Halep (Romania), Elina Svitolina (Ukraine), Caroline Wozniacki (Denmark), and Caroline Garcia (France).

No other Latvian player had ever made it to the WTA Finals until today.

Ostapenko has played Muguruza three times so far, winning one match. She has faced Pliskova twice, losing both matches, and played Williams once - also losing that match.

Therefore Ostapenko has lost five and won one match against the players in her group. Had she been drawn into the other group, she would have six matches won to one lost.

Of the eight finalists this year, only Williams has won the WTA Finals once, in 2008.

Ostapenko won her first two career titles this season: she triumphed at the French Open in June and at the Korean Open in September. She is currently ranked seventh in the WTA rankings.
