Estonian Defense League, defense forces to help safeguard US vice president during visit

The Estonian government on Thursday approved involving the volunteer corps Kaitseliit (Defense League) and the defense forces in safeguarding the visit of U.S. Vice President Mike Pence on Sunday and Monday, reports LETA/BNS.


The government at a sitting on Thursday decided to approve involving the Estonian defense forces and the volunteer corps Kaitseliit in safeguarding the visit of U.S. Vice President Mike Pence, spokespeople for the government said.


According to the Law Enforcement Act such a decision can be made by the government with the agreement of the president.


On Sunday Pence is to meet with Estonian Prime Minister Juri Ratas. On Monday he and Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid will take part in a roundtable on cyber and innovation. Thereafter Pence is to have a meeting with Kaljulaid, Latvian President Raimonds Vejonis and Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaite.


The U.S. vice president will also meet with commander of the Estonian Defense Forces Gen. Riho Terras as well as with soldiers of the NATO battle group and Estonia. He will also hold a speech.
