The first sighting of a harlequin duck (Histrionicus histrionicus) in Latvia has been reported earlier this week, according to information posted on Latvia’s birding website Latvijasputni.lv. writes LETA.

A bird of this species was for the first time seen swimming in the Gulf of Riga near the Mangalsala pier in Riga on Wednesday, October 26. The duck was observed there also on Thursday.

The photographs of the duck suggest that this is a female harlequin duck.

The harlequin duck is a small sea duck breeding in cold fast moving streams in north-western and north-eastern North America, Greenland, Iceland and eastern Russia.
