Italy's city of
Florence has renamed a section of its Via Unione Sovieticae (Soviet Union
Street) to Via Lituania (Lithuania Street), the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry said.
Lithuania's ambassador to Italy, Jolanta Balcieniene, said during a ceremony on Sunday that she was
very glad to see the street of Lithuania in such a historically and culturally
important city as Florence.
In the future, the city plans to rename the entire Via
Unione Sovieticae after countries that regained independence from the Soviet
Union, the ministry said
The name of Lithuania last June was given to a square in
Palermo. Several other Italian cities, including Rome, Olbia and Rimini, also
have squares or streets named after Lithuania, it said.
