Heart-dead donor's organs to be transplanted in Lithuania for first time

BC, Vilnius, 25.07.2016.Print version

Organs retrieved from a donor whose heart had stopped beating will be transplanted in Lithuania for the first time on Friday, informs LETA/BNS.

Surgeons at Kaunas Clinics removed the donor's cornea and kidneys after cardiac death on Thursday and will perform transplant operations on four recipients on Friday, told Audrone Buziuviene, deputy director of the National Transplant Bureau.

"This is a new phase in Lithuania's organ donation and transplantation history," Kaunas Clinics said in a press release.

"The experience of European countries shows that with proper preparation and with the public's support, the new donation program may help to significantly increase the number of transplantation operations and reduce the number of patients waiting for transplantation," it said.

According to the National Transplant Bureau, two models of organ donation were used in Lithuania until now: live donation and donation after brain death.
