First sighting of eastern imperial eagle reported in Latvia
The first sighting of the eastern imperial eagle (Aquila heliaca) has been recorded in Latvia, Dabasdati.lv wildlife website reported, cites LETA.
So far, the presence of an eastern imperial eagle in Latvia had only been recorded by radio tracking.
This time, biologist and birdwatcher Gaidis Grandans reported a visual sighting of the eagle and posted a picture of the bird on Twitter.
Until now, there had only been three known cases of eastern imperial eagles flying into Latvia. They were recorded in 2013, 2014 and 2015, according to information on www.ornitofaunistika.com website.
The eastern imperial eagle is a large species of bird of prey that breeds from southeastern Europe to western and central Asia. Most populations are migratory and winter in northeastern Africa and southern and eastern Asia.
