BC, Riga, 24.05.2016.Print version

The bird watchers taking part in the annual Battle of Towers counted a total of 170 species of birds during this year’s birding competition, Agnis Buss, a representative of the Latvian Ornithological Society, told LETA.

Ten teams of experienced birders spent 24 hours in birdwatching towers, while four teams of less experienced bird watchers took part in a four-hour competition. Altogether, 286 people visited the birdwatching towers during the competition.

The team named Himantopus himantopus won the competition in all the key categories as it not only reported the highest number of bird species observed during the 24 hours, but also won the title as the Friendliest Team, and their sighting of a red-crested pochard (Netta rufina) in Lake Kanieris was named the Most Interesting Observation.

Himantopus himantopus counted 92 bird species from their tower at Lake Kanieris in central Latvia.
