“Liberation” of Tallinn was celebrated peacefully
Print versionAn estimated amount of a couple of hundred persons celebrated peacefully the day that they call day of liberation of Tallinn near the Bronze Soldier monument on Monday, writes Postimees Online.
Those who convened to the monument’s location included war veterans of the Red Army, ambassadors of Russia and of Belarus and the scandalous Finnish writer Johan Bäckman.
There were also a number of representatives of different media outlets to whom Bäckman spoke about his book “Bronze Soldier – the background and essence of the monument conflict in Estonia”.
In the year 1944, on September 22, the Soviet forces reached Tallinn which had been abandoned by the German troops by then. The Pikk Hermann Tower bore the Estonian national flag and the Government led by Otto Tief had been appointed.
Veterans of the Soviet army and a part of the Russian-speaking population celebrates September 22 as the day of liberating Tallinn of German occupants.
