At a ceremony that took place at noon on Saturday, a cornerstone was installed for the Victory monument of the War of Independence, writes Postimees Online.

Speaker of Riigikogu Ene Ergma, minister of defence Jaak Aaviksoo and the Mayor of Tallinn participated in the event organised by the Ministry of Defence in co-operation with the foundation Vabaduse Monument.

The ceremony was also attended by the chairpersons of the political parties represented in the Parliament who added their party logos in the cylinder placed in the cornerstone.

“I believe that we cannot leave this matter unfinished now, while looking for absolute beauty. There is no reason for debating whether the artists won, the engineers won or if the Government won this dispute,” said Ergma in her speech.

The minister of defence Jaak Aaviksoo stated that the Estonian nation has paid a heavy price for its freedom. “The memory of all those who paid this heavy price will have to be fit within the Victory monument of the War of Independence,” stated Aaviksoo. He urged people to convene at Harjumäe, the location for the monument in order to open the monument and pay the debt of honour and reach the end of the path that has been delayed for eighty seven years.
