Estonia's Smigun-Vahi could be stripped of Olympic medals

BC, Tallinn, 23.11.2015.Print version

Norwegian television channel TV2 has information that former Estonian cross-country skier Kristina Smigun-Vahi who is under a cloud of doping suspicion could be stripped of the two gold medals she won at the Turin Olympic Winter Games in 2006, the public broadcaster ERR reported on Friday night, cites LETA.

It was reported last year that molecules indicative of the use of banned substances had been found in the samples Smigun-Vahi provided in 2006.

According to TV2 both A and B samples of Smigun-Vahi tested positive but the case has been referred to the Court of Arbitration for Sport that has been dealing with it for a year and a half.

Smigun-Vahi won the women's 15 km pursuit and the 10 km classical race at the Turin Winter Olympics.

She has earlier repeatedly denied using banned substances during her career in sport and vowed to fight to the end for the truth.
