European Social Democrats meet in Vilnius on September 11-12

The Socialist Group in the European Parliament, which is the second according to the number of members – 217 MEPs – will discuss in Vilnius the issues of creating attractive job places, migration in the European Union (EU) and other social issues relevant to the European Union (EU) and Lithuania, reports ELTA.

 

It will be one of the events of the parliamentary group intended to prepare for the elections of the European Parliament in 2009.

 

At the meeting in Vilnius on September 11-12, 34 socialist MEPs from various EU member states will discuss their election programmes and the strategy of the campaign together with Lithuanian Social Democrats, the representatives of trade unions and non-governmental organizations, political scientists and journalists.

 

The meeting will be attended by Martin Schulz, chairman of the Socialist Group in the European Parliament, deputy chairmen Hanes Svoboda and Jan Marinus Wiersma, as well as Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, chairman of the European Socialist Party, former Danish prime minister.

 

Schulz will meet with Prime Minister Gediminas Kirkilas, Social Minister Vilija Blinkeviciute.

 

MEPs intend to hold a news conference at the Seimas, which will be attended by Schulz, Kirkilas, Rasmussen and MEP Justas Paleckis, head of Lithuanian delegation in the Socialist Group in the European Parliament.
