BC, Tallinn, 03.09.2015.Print version

Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves was diagnosed with Lyme disease, which however does not affect his work, LETA/Maaleht online wrote.

The President went to the forests to pick mushrooms at the beginning of August and a few days later, he was diagnosed with Lyme disease or borreliosis in the Viljandi hospital.

The President gets treatments prescribed by doctors and performs everyday work tasks, the Office of the President told Maaleht.

The Lyme disease, spread by ticks, is typically treated with antibiotics.

In the first seven months of this year, 455 cases of Lyme disease were recorded in Estonia, the same level compared to the previous year. The highest incidence rate per 100,000 inhabitants is in the Saaremaa Island – 188.9, in Läänemaa – 160.3 and Hiiumaa Island – 104.8. The lowest rate was in Ida-Virumaa and Valga Counties, 2.3 and 3.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants respectively.
