Latvian "Remix" to mark 30th anniversary with series of concerts in November

BC, Riga, 26.08.2015.Print version

The legendary Latvian rock group "Remix" will mark its 30th anniversary this fall by performing concerts in four Latvian cities, as the band's guitarist Aivars Hermanis told LETA.

At the concerts from November 14 to 18, the band will perform instrumental music and new versions of the most popular "Remix" songs. Liepaja Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jekabs Ozolins, will join the band on stage.

The band was established in 1985 at Raimonds Pauls' initiative, bringing together the greatest professionals at the time. The band's performances were looked up to by other musicians and won critical and public acclaim, and "Remix" soon rose to the status of the Latvian supergroup.

According to Hermanis, the music of "Remix" is very melodic, arranged and performed by talented musicians. The band has won numerous awards and prizes, including the 1st place at "Mikrofona aptauja" nationwide vote in 1988 with Raimonds Pauls' song "Pie laika". The concerts in November will feature this and other hit songs of "Remix", and instrumental music composed by the band's individual members.

Guest performers at the concerts will be singer Ieva Kerevica, percussionist Ivars Kalnins, and a brass band led by Uldis Ziedins. The original "Remix" bassist Jevgenijs Scapovs could also join the band for the performances.

The band is especially pleased at the renewed collaboration with Liepaja Symphony Orchestra. The band and the orchestra were performing together at the end of the 1980s and a year ago, when Liepaja was celebrating the birthday of composer Vilnis Smidbergs. The concert in Liepaja will be in the new "Lielais dzintars" Concert Hall.

The "Remix" Latvia tour will commence on November 14 with a concert at the new "Gors" Concert Hall in Rezekne, followed by a concert at the new "Cesis" Concert Hall in Cesis on November 15, a concert at Daile Theater in Riga on November 16, and close with a concert at "Lielais dzintars" on November 17.

Tickets are available from "Bilesu paradize" outlets.

The original lineup of "Remix" included Hermanis on the guitar, Uldis Marhilevics on keyboards, drummer Vilnis Krievins, and frontman Igo. Bassist Scapovs was later replaced by Eduards Glotovs. All members of "Remix", except Scapovs, come from Liepaja, Hermanis stressed.

"Remix" has played pop, rock, jazz music, songs composed by members of the band as well as other composers, and accompanied Pauls in concerts and recording sessions. After Igo won the "Jurmala 86" competition he became an international star. "Remix" have performed all over the what was then Soviet Union, and also in Norway, Germany, Finland, Poland and other countries. In 1989 the band came to U.S. managers' attention and "Remix" went to the United States. However, this is when the band went through a period of sweeping changes, and at one point ceased to exist.

A compilation of best "Remix" songs was released in mid-1990s. The members of the band continued to work as individual musicians, yet they often collaborated and sometimes reunited to perform as "Remix".
