BC, Riga, 30.07.2015.Print version

For the first time in Latvia, on August 20, Dzintari Concert Hall will welcome the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, as Martins Pucka, representative of the concert hall, informed LETA. The conductor will be Zubin Mehta.

Pucka said that ever since the establishment of Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, it has been one of the most prominent orchestras in the world, and they regularly perform at the world's most prestigious concert halls and festivals.

The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra was founded by violinist Bronislaw Huberman in 1936. Its inaugural concert was conducted by Arturo Toscanini. Mehta has served as the IPO's Music Advisor since 1968 but in 1977, Mehta was appointed the IPO's first Music Director. In 1988, the IPO bestowed American composer and conductor Leonard Bernstein with the title of Laureate Conductor. In 1992, Kurt Masur was granted the IPO's Honorary Guest Conductor title but since 2011, Gianandrea Noseda is the Principal Guest Conductor.

Conductor Mehta was born in India in a musical family. Mehta initially intended to study medicine, but eventually became a music student in Vienna at the age of 18. Seven years later Mehta conducted two of the world's most prestige orchestras – Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. He has been Music Director to the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic and New York Philharmonic Orchestra. As a music director or as a music advisor he also participated in the festival "Maggio Musicale Fiorentino" in Florence and was a Music Director of the Bavarian State Opera in Munich.

Mehta is an honorary citizen of Florence and Tel Aviv. He was made an honorary member of the Vienna State Opera and the Bavarian State Opera. He is the Honorary Conductor of Vienna Philharmonic, the Munich Philharmonic, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Bavarian State and "Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino" orchestras. Together with his brother Zarin, they constitute the Advisor Council of the Mehli Mehta Foundation, a foundation that helps educate more that 200 children in Mumbai about the classical music from Western Europe. In 1981, IPO elevated his title to Music Director for Life.
