BC, Tallinn, 06.07.2015.Print version

Estonian President Toomas Hendrik Ilves will follow also in 2015 the custom started in 1992, according to which the Estonian president does not go on a vacation and instead gets a financial compensation for it, LETA/Eesti Päevaleht online reports.

Head of the President's Office Piret Pert said that none of the presidents of Estonia after Estonia regained its independence, has taken an annual vacation, and after the end of the term of office, they have all been paid a compensation for unused vacation days, just as the law stipulates. Ilves's vacation compensation is 6,026 euros per year for the prescribed 35 days of vacation.

Pert has earlier said that head of state is the head of state 365 or 366 days a year. Also, there are several practical problems connected to the president's vacation, like the powers of the Riigikogu speaker would have to be suspended, so that the person could substitute for the president during the vacation, and a substitute MP would have to be called in for the Riigikogu speaker.
