On June 11th 2015, the Latvian national women's basketball team opened this year's European Women's Basketball Championships (EuroBasket 2015) in Hungary with a loss to group favorites Serbia, reports LETA.

Team Latvia got off to a promising start in the first quarter, but with injuries, foul trouble and 3-pointers missing the mark, it unraveled completely in the second half versus Serbia, and the final score was 76:60.

The highest scorer for Latvian was Anete Jekabsone-Zogota with 11 points, followed by Kristine Vitola with 9 points and 16 rebounds.

The Latvian women's basketball team is in the same preliminary round group (Group C) at this year's EuroBasket tournament with Serbia, Croatia, Russia and Great Britain.

The top three teams in each of the four groups will advance to the tournament's second group stage.

In the other group match last night, Russia defeated Croatia 83:62.

Latvia will play its next group match today against Croatia. The match will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. (Latvian time) and will be broadcast live on TV6.

Latvia will play its final two group matches on Saturday against Great Britain and on Sunday against Russia.

EuroBasket 2015 will also serve as the qualification tournament for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, with the winner automatically qualifying, while those place 2nd to 5th will play in a pre-Olympic qualification tournament.

The 2015 European Women's Basketball Championships will be played in Hungary and Romania from June 11 to 28.
